The Dining Room

The dining-room leads off the kitchen. It is part of the open-plan space at the heart of the house and is separated by a different level from the sitting-room. A massive ridge-beam on top of two heavy timber supports runs the length of the divide and holds up the roof. On the left of the photo there is a half-door intended to avoid the occasional little grandchild going onto the landing and down the stair to the sitting room.

The dining-room is the only room in the house with a window facing north: on this side of the island windows and doors rarely looked north.
